No need to go as far back as a week or a month, in the past 2 days alone I have had the following problems 😡

  • a power surge partially frying my computer (I had a surge protector – it did nothing!)
  • got a new monitor which did not fully work with my Linux (I primarily use Windows XP, but sometimes boot into Linux) – a long painful manual setup followed
  • the state of the university computers is “bloody useless”, and the technicians are either non-existent or just too damn lazy to respond to emails or fix anything. I have had to redo hours of work due to software/hardware/god-knows-what failures!
  • Even my cellphone is crashing on me and refusing to send text messages!

And these are all just mild typical problems that occur regularly. No hard disk failure or anything. I hate computers. I truly do… I dream of doing this:

A pity that I’m working on a postgraduate degree in comptuer science… đŸ˜„

I have stumbled upon quite a… bizare … site. An American student (?) puts himself live on the internet 24-7. Quote “even in the bathroom” :-o. You can find it at Justin.tv.

This reminds me of the Truman Show – where Jim Carrey unwittingly lives inside a fake world created around him just so that he could be filmed and broadcast live to millions of TV viewers.

Truman Show

Well… not quite, this guy knows about it and carries the camera itself. I have no idea how, or why, anyone would do this and why people would flock to see him… live his ordinary-Joe life!!!

Honestly I think this won’t last very long. How long can someone carry on being filmed for so long without having some sort of a break down? If not him personally, I can’t understand how the people around him would cope even just talking to him knowing that there are 30 or so strangers watching and listening to them at the same time! I certainly would not be too comfortable talking to someone like that for too long.

Justin will wear the camera until the day he dies. By which we mean if he takes it off, we’ll kill him.

Well… good luck Justin… I guess 😯

Merry Christmas to everyone from New Zealand (where midnight has passed and now it is officially Christmas).  I hope everyone has a good day, even if you don’t celebrate Christmas.

And this is what I will get as a present to my PC for next Christmas:

USB Christmas Tree

A USB Christmas Tree, these guys are wonderful!

Yes, it is true. You, right now, are poluting the planet.

According to a New Scientist article someone gave to me: “creation , packaging, storage and movement of just 10 megabytes of data – from the making of the hardware to the running of the system that delivers it to you – requires the energy equivalent of burning 900 grams of coal“. And furthermore they say that computers use 10% of electricity generated in the US.

Of course if you are reading this your hardware has already been created, but there are still the transfer costs, the server running costs and the electricity you are using for your PC – so you, right now, are harming our planet! 👿

If anyone is interested, the article is “The waste at the heart of the web” which is in the 16th of December New Scientist issue. Here is a link to an incomplete version of it on their website

Oh whoopie doo, did you know that sharing music is a horrible heinous crime against humanity?

Well it truly is. That’s nothing new. There is a wonderful association called RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), centred in the land of the brave, has even been suing 12yo girls for $1000s of dollars. That will show those evil file sharers! Everyone downloads music illegally, but lets just pick a 12yo, sue her ass and show them who is boss! In the end, the RIAA was very very kind and generous and settled for just $2000. In another incident the RIAA sued a dead man for his estate, but come on, they’re not that mean, they allowed the family a 60 day grieving period.

Of course that is old news, now we are getting more and more excitement like legal music downloads from places like iTunes, which do their best to put so much DRM crap into their music that you get a track that even you can barely use whenever you want. iTunes is pretty much for iPod only, lots of other sites are not even iPod compatible. I have an iRiver (competitor of iPod) and I doubt that too much of this “legal” music will play on it.

There are free (but oh so illegal) options available to get all the music that you want, without the putting an evil piece of software into your PC that you can’t control and that won’t let you listen to your own damn music in whatever way you like – so how do these people expect us to pay them money for the extra inconvinience!

They preach bullshit about poor artists not being able to earn money off music if it is shared illegally… Have you seen Michael Jackson’s ranch??? 😀 Oh poor, poor artists! How will they eat! You know, even if they officially gave away all their music for free, they would make more money than most of us could ever dream of! If you’ve ever been to a concert you’d see how many people there are and how much they pay for entrance each! Not to mention things like MTV, radio channels, movies, etc that pay them big $$$ for the rights their music.

After reading about law suits against kids and dead people, I’m not sure that I even want to support these guys even if they didn’t want to enslave my music!

Hello!

I have had a blog before, but I deleted it for various reasons. Now I want to try to do something a bit different and focus less on myself (which I get enough of 24-7 anyway) but more on what I see around me and what intersts me.

Weird Al’s white & nerdy song is an understatement for me! I have edited Wikipedia in the past, JavaScript is below me, I do have Stephen Hawkings in my library, I do calculus as a University tutor, and I am currently shopping for an ergonomic keyboard 😆 I also have a BSc with majors in Comptuer Science and Pure Mathematics and I will carry on postgrad study next semester! Damn, that sounds nerdy even to me 😀 Oh, and of course I was born in what was once kindly labelled an Evil Empire! 😈

Watch this space for rants coming up!
